Recommendation

Recordings from Security Control Room should be kept for "only a few days" such as 3 days in case of continuously analysed recordings. From our experience, up to 1 week should be acceptable for the Data Protection Office, and up to 2 weeks for occasionally visited premises if the recordings are analysed only in case of a security incident (not permanently). Immediately afterwards, the recording should be deleted unless (in case of an incident) necessary for further civil, administrative or criminal proceedings.

According to general data processing principles (art. 4 and art. 12 et seq. FADP), personal data may be retained as long as its processing remains suitable and necessary for achieving the predefined processing purpose. Please note: Personal data recorded by a camera must be deleted within a particularly short period of time. In most cases, an offence against persons or property will be noticed within only a few hours of its commission. Therefore, a storage period of 24 hours appears sufficient regarding the purpose pursued, provided no damage to persons or property is noted within that period. Where objective and important reasons justify a longer storage time, the storage period may be

near dangerous machines and installations, in vaults, near outdoor gas equipment installations, in warehouses for dangerous or precious goods, or at bank counters. If public places are concerned, the need for a permit must be clarified in advance with the municipality. The monitored areas must be indicated by signs or pictograms located at eye level. The retention of records must be limited in time. The data retention period depends on the purpose of the monitoring. As a general rule, recordings must be deleted within 24 to 72 hours.
